Paradisea [sic] maria Reichenow, 1894

Reichenow, A. (1894): Paradisea maria n. sp. Ornithologische Monatsberichte 2(2): 22 [22– 23].

Now Paradisaea raggiana augustaevictoriae View in CoL x Paradisaea guilielmi (Hybrid) View in CoL . See Stresemann 1930: 9, Frith and Beehler 1998: 504.

HOLOTYPE: ZMB 31049. Adult male. Loc.: Finisterre Mountains, Astrolabe Bay (1500 ft.) [ Papua New Guinea, 5°54' S, 146°18' E]. Date: [not given]. Ex. coll. Kricheldorff. [Skin; data on ZMB label and register]. GoogleMaps

Remark: The description was based on a single specimen, now regarded to be a hybrid. It came via natural history dealers, the family of Kricheldorff, into the hands of Reichenow. It is assumed that it had been obtained by Franz Kricheldorff (1853–1924) during his extensive travels ( Gebhardt 1970: 77–78). The bird was named for Maria Reichenow , the wife of the author.
