Now Ailuroedus melanotis astigmaticus Mayr, 1931 . See Frith and Frith 2004: 237. In Mayr 1962a: 174 as Ailuroedus crassirostris astigmaticus , followed by Dickinson 2003: 427. Gilliard 1969: 266 pointed out why he considered A. melanotis and A. crassirostris to be separate species.

HOLOTYPE: ZMB 30.1973 . Adult male. Loc.: Ogeramnang [Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, 6°29' S, 147°22' E]. Date: 30 March 1929. Coll.: Mayr No. 1216. Iris: red (blood?). Bill: grey. Testes: small. Weight: 216 gms. [Skin; data on Mayr ZMB label].

COMMENTS: Dr. Ernst Mayr (1904–2005) collected in the Saruwaget Mountains from 8 December 1928 to 9 April 1929. The operative base was Finschhafen, the coastal town of the Huon­Peninsula, NE­New Guinea. The village Ogeramnang is situated in the foothills of the Saruwaget Mountains at 1785m a.s.l. (see Mayr 1931: 640–646, Greenway 1935, Haffer 1997: 440–446, 809–811 and Steinheimer 2004: 94).
