COMMENTS: Specimens collected by Mayr in the Saruwaget­Mountains are not part of the type series. Mayr (1930) referred to six adult male specimens, and some females. One can argue whether birds in immature and subadult male plumage are part of the type series as they were not explicitly mentioned in the original description. ZMB 30.1965 , a bird in immature plumage similar to adult female plumage, might be the second female Mayr was referring to when using the plural application of " die Weibchen ". An adult male bird of this taxon from Mayr's collection, ZMB 30.1966 , has data attached, which stems from a different bird species (iris brown, feet grey, weight 43 gms.). I assume that this specimen with erroneous data was not used for the original description. See Ailuroedus melanotis astigmaticus for details of the trip. The type of the subspecies L. s. niedda Mayr, 1930, was never part of the ZMB collection, contra Frith & Beehler (1998). The holotype and four paratypes went via the Rothschild collection and Leonard C. Sanford’s (1878–1950) share of the Mayr collection to the AMNH. The holotype is AMNH 678265 (female, Mayr no. 1418; Mary LeCroy, in litt., May 2005) .
