Type locality. Democratic Republic of Congo, National Park Garamba.
Type material examined. Holotype ♂: DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: “ Congo Belge, P. N. G. [= National Park Garamba], Miss. H. De Saeger, II/gd/17, 10-IV-1951, Rec. H. De Saeger, 1557”. Paratypes: 2 ♂, 2 ♀: same data as holotype ( MRAC, JJRC).
Additional material examined: CAMEROON: 1 ♀: Foumbot, 13.v.1968 (with the label “ Paratype, Eulissus giganteus n. sp., L. Levasseur det. 1970, in litt.”) ( MNHNP); 1 ♀: Foumbot, Safa, 25.iv.1970 ( MNHNP); 1 ♀: Cameroon (?), Mt Ngaha (?), 3.vi.1971 (with the label “ Holotype, Thyreocephalus inexpectatus n. sp., L. Levasseur det. 1968, in litt.”) ( MNHNP). CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC: 1 ♀: Nahovvi (?), 20 km Bouar, 10.xi.1968, P. Teocchi ( ABFI); 1 ♂: La Maboke, 2.v.1964, R. Pujol (with the label “édeage et dern. segm. abd.
accidants!”, in coll. Levasseur) ( MNHNP); 1 ♂: Lobaye pr. Ngoto forest, 150 km NWW Mbaiki near Grima, 12– 15.vi. 2009, 600m, A. Kudrna Jr. lgt.” ( JJRC).
Redescription. Body length 32–35 mm; length from anterior margin of head to posterior margin of elytra: 20– 23 mm. Body elongate, moderately slender. Dark brown, elytra and abdomen red or reddish-brown, antennae brown with apical half of segment 11 reddish-brown ( Fig. 104 View FIGURES 102 – 107. 102, 103 ). Head and pronotum and related punctation as in Fig. 105 View FIGURES 102 – 107. 102, 103 , 109 View FIGURES 109 – 113 ; labrum as in Fig. 110 View FIGURES 109 – 113 . Elytra trapezoidal, about as long as wide, with prominent humeral angles; surface with fine and sparse punctation. Abdomen with extremely fine punctures.
Male. Tergite 10 and sternite 9 of male genital segment as in Figs. 111, 112 View FIGURES 109 – 113 . Aedeagus ( Fig. 113 View FIGURES 109 – 113 ) 3.1–3.7 mm long, long and narrow, with long and slender parameres and very narrow inner sac, covered with very fine scales.
Differential diagnosis. Thyreocephalus giganteus differs from the other Thyreocephalus from Africa south of the Sahara in the extremely large body, the absence of postocular punctures and in the shape of the aedeagus.
Distribution. The species is distributed in Cameroon, Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo ( Fig. 108 View FIGURE 108 ).
