General character states of Flax are defined above in subfamily Tentaxinae , under diagnoses.

Flax comprises 29 species, which are superficially rather variable in forewing pattern, although similar in size. As with Alienia , it has not been possible to find convincing evidence for separating the species into separate genera, although some of the species-groups are small and have rather well-defined structures.
