Amydetes fucata Motschulsky, 1854 View in CoL

(Figs. 5, 27, 46, 65, 83, 102, 111, 129, 164–167)

Amydetes fucatus Motschulsky, 1854: 25 View in CoL ; Lacordaire, 1857: 334; Olivier, 1907a: 48; Blackwelder, 1957: 360 (lis.); McDermott, 1966: 77 (cat.).

Amydetes View in CoL sp. 4 [s ic]; Viviani, 2001: 141

Diagnosis. Antennomere III with flabellum 2–2.5x longer than antennomere III, as long as pedicel. Pronotum with posterior angle projected and deflexed. Elytron enlarged toward apex, marginal costa with anterior margin projected. Abdominal sternum V with posterior margin discreetly emarginate. Abdominal sterna VI and VII with lanterns almost as length and wide as these sterna.

Colouration. (Fig. 5) Integument dark-brown. Pronotum with expansions light-brown or pale yellow.

Head. ( Figs. 27 View FIGURES 23 – 40 , 46) Fronto-clypeus strongly depressed up to antennal sockets, anterior margin slightly more than 2x wider than distance between antennal sockets and almost as long as distance between antennifers. Antenna with 36–41 antennomeres (n= 3); antennomere III as long as pedicel, with flabellum 2–2.5x longer than antennomere III. Labrum emarginate. Maxillary palpomere IV 3x longer than III, 1/3 longer than labial palpomere III. Gular sutures as separeted as maxillary palpomere IV width.

Thorax: (Figs. 65, 83, 102) Pronotum notably transverse, with lateral margins divergent posteriad, posterior angle projected, acute and deflexed; setigerous punctures irregularly separeted 1– 2 x the diameter of a puncture. Hypomeron ca. 1.5x longer than high. Elytron enlarged toward apex; marginal costa with anterior margin projected. Scutellum with lateral margins convergent posteriad. Mesosternum with posterior projection acute.

Abdomen. ( Figs. 111 View FIGURES 107 – 115 , 129 View FIGURES 125 – 133 , 164–167 View FIGURES 160 – 171 ) Abdominal sternum V with posterior margin discreetly emarginate, connected to abdominal sternum VI in a subterminal position. Abdominal sterna VI and VII with lanterns almost as length and wide as these sterna. Abdominal sternum VIII with posterior margin straight or irregular, not medially projected. Pygidium with median lobe as wide as 3/4 posterior margin width, rounded and longer than lateral lobe, which is rudimentary; indentation between lateral lobe and median lobe weakly developed. Terminalia: Syntergite with margins anterior acuminate and posterior asymmetric. Suture between abdominal tergites IX and X conspicuous. Abdominal sternum IX 3x longer than wide, 2x longer than syntergite, bristled at the posterior 1/2; lateral margins slightly asymmetric, divergent posteriad up to 3/4 sternum length. Aedeagus: Phallobase symmetric. Parameres basally constricted, subapically close-set. Phallum and paramere apically rounded. Phallum 1/3 longer than paramere, ventral plate indistict.

Scale. 1mm.

Ecology. Viviani (2001) quoted: “… the adult males flew emitting intense and long lasting greenish glows in the darkness. Luminescence is stimulated by handling”. We assume that this species is strictly nocturnal, as suggested by the general colour (opaque colours) and morphology (large eyes and lanterns). See Circadian Diversity for a more detailed remarks.

Type-material. We weren’t able to find the type-material of this species, and it is not in Motschulsky’s collection at the Zoological Collection of the University of Moscow (cf., Kazantsev & Nikitsky 2008). On the other hand, we were able to study specimens from the type-locality, Santa Catarina, and specimens determined at NHM and ex-collection Olivier (MNHN).

Remarks. A. fucata resembles A. fastigiata (Fig. 4) and A. plaumanni sp. nov. ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ). A. fucata differs from A. fastigiata by the characteristics pointed at the Remarks section of this species. It differs from Amydetes plaumanni sp. nov. by maxillary palpomere IV 3x longer than III (2x longer in Amydetes plaumanni sp. nov.) and abdominal sternum V with posterior margin discreetly emarginate (straight in Amydetes plaumanni sp. nov.).
