Diagnosis. Gular sutures as separeted as maxillary palpomere IV width. Pronotum with lateral margins divergent posteriad, posterior angle acute, projected and deflexed. Hypomeron 2x longer than high. Abdominal sternum V strongly emarginate. Pygidium with median lobe as wide as 3/5 posterior margin width, rounded and slightly longer than lateral lobe, which is weakly projected.

Colouration. (Fig. 4) Integument dark-brown. Pronotum with a pair of pale yellow maculae

or not; expansions pale yellow. Elytron with suture and outer margin pale yellow. Abdominal sterna dark-brown.

Head. ( Figs. 19–22 View FIGURES 19 – 22 , 26 View FIGURES 23 – 40 , 41) Fronto-clypeus strongly depressed up to antennal sockets, anterior margin 2/5 wider than distance between antennal sockets, slightly wider than distance between antennifers. Antenna with 35– 41 antennomeres (n= 3); antennomere III 1 /5 longer than pedicel, flabellum ca. 2.5x longer than antennomere III. Labrum emarginate or bilobate, sclerotized or sagittaly membranous. Maxillary palpomere IV ca. 3x longer than III, as long as labial palpomere III. Gular sutures as separeted as 1/2 maxillary palpomere IV width.

Thorax. (Figs. 45, 60, 64, 82, 101, 103–106) Pronotum with lateral margins divergent posteriad, posterior angle acute, well-developed and deflexed; setigerous punctures irregularly saparate 1– 2 x the diameter of a puncture. Hypomeron 2x longer than high. Scutellum with lateral margins slightly convergent posteriad. Elytron slightly broader subapically; slightly dehiscent; marginal costa with anterior margin projected. Mesosternum with posterior margin acute. Proendosternum with two processes, bent posteriad. Mesendosternum with two parasagittal alate projections. Metendosternum spatulate, with two lateral laminae.

Abdomen. ( Figs. 110 View FIGURES 107 – 115 , 128 View FIGURES 125 – 133 , 145–146 View FIGURES 143 – 146. 143 – 145 , 160–163 View FIGURES 160 – 171 ) Abdominal sternum V with posterior margin strongly emarginated, connected to abdominal sternum VI in a subterminal position. Abdominal sternum VI with lantern as long as 3/5 sternum length. Abdominal sternum VII with lantern almost as long as and as wide as 3/5 sternum width. Abdominal sternum VIII with posterior margin straight or irregular, not medially projected. Pygidium with median lobe as wide as 3/5 posterior margin width, rounded or discreetly beveled and alightly longer than lateral lobe, which is beveled and rounded; indentation between lateral and median lobe weakly developed. Terminalia: Syntergite with lateral margins convergent posteriad; anterior margin rounded, posterior slightly asymmetric. Suture between abdominal tergites IX and X indistinct. Abdominal sternum IX 3x longer than wide and 2x longer than syntergite; wider and bristled at posterior 1/3, lateral margins divergent posteriad up to 2/3 sternum length. Aedeagus: Phallobase symmetric. Parameres basally constricted, close-set medially; slightly acuminate apically. Phallum 1/3 longer than paramere, apex subtruncate, ventral plate sinuous and well-sclerotized.

Ecology. Active from the end of the dusk up to slightly after the sunrise, generally more active on moist days, generally slowly flying 1–1.5m above the ground.

Type-material. Syntype examined (ZMB). Labels: Bahia, Brasilien, plumicornis n., fastigiata Ill. *. Lampyris p. Latr. (Hbldt) [green label]. Bahia, Brasilien, plumicornis n., fastigiata Ill. *. Lampyris p. Latr. (Hbldt) [green label, printed]. Its not the holotype because ZMB curators suspect that Illiger could have studied other specimens which he supposedly deposited in another collections. Kuntzen (1912) explains that the asterisk at ZMB labels means type-material. Holotype of Amydetes vigorsi Westwood, 1830 examined, which bears no labels (OUM).

Remarks. Laporte (1840) redescribed Amydetes and synonymized A. vigorsi with A. fastigiata . However, he mistakenly recognized A. fastigiata as the junior synonym. By the principle of priority (ICZN op. cit.), A. fastigiata must be the senior synonyn, and Amydetes vigorsi its junior synonym.

Amydetes fastigiata resembles A. agnita (Fig. 1), A. discissa (Fig. 3), A. fucata (Fig. 5), Amydetes manezinha sp. nov. (Fig. 9) and Amydetes plaumanni sp. nov. ( Figs. 12 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ), from it differs in gular sutures as close-set as maxillary palpomere IV width. It differs from A. agnita by the characteristics pointed at the Remarks section of this species. It differs from A. discissa by the characteristics pointed at the Remarks section of this species. It differs from A. fucata by the fronto-clypeus with anterior margin 2/5 wider than distance between antennifers (1/ 5 in A. fucata ), antennomere III 1 /5 longer than pedicel (as long as pedicel in A. fucata ) and posterior margin of abdominal sternum V strongly emarginate (discreetly emarginate in A. fucata ). A. fastigiata can be distinguished from A. manezinha sp. nov. by antennomere III with flabellum longer than antennomere III (subequal in A. manezinha sp. nov.) and fronto-clypeus strongly depressed (discreetly depressed in A. manezinha sp. nov.). A. fastigiata differs from A. plaumanni sp. nov. by abdominal sternum VI with lantern as long as 3/5 sternum length and abdominal sternum VII with lantern almost as long as sternum and as wide as 3/5 sternum width (abdominal sterna VI and VII with lanterns almost as long and wide as these sterna in A. plaumanni sp. nov.), fronto-clypeus strongly depressed (discreetly depressed in A.manezinha sp. nov.) and hypomeron 2x longer than high (1.5x in A. plaumanni sp. nov.).

We propose the synonymy of Amydetes vigorsi Westwood 1830 after the study of the holotype, deposited in Hope Entomological Collections, OUM. Gorham (1880a) identified a series of specimens collected near Rio de Janeiro as Amythetes fastigiata (sic), but indicates as “indescript.?”. Kuntzen (1912) pointed out that A. fastigiata was a name in litteris and proposed a new species based on Gorham’s (1880a) specimens and description, which he called Amydetes gorhami . Based on Gorham’s description, and the locality of collection of these specimens, we consider A. gorhami Kuntzen 1912 to be a subjective synonym of A. fastigiata Illiger, 1807 . We didn’t find the type-material of Lampyris plumicornis Latreille 1811 , which is another synonym of A. fastigiata Illiger, 1807 .
