Filistata insignis O. P.- Cambridge, 1896a: 211, pl. 26, fig. 12, pl. 28, fig. 8 (Syntypes adult male and immature female from Valley of the Motagua and San Antonio, Guatemala, deposited in BMNH, examined).

Material examined. GUATEMALA. Department of Escuintla: Santa Rosa, Iztapa (13°55’59”S 90°42’27”W), July 2006, C. Viquez col., 1Ƌ 4♀ 5 imm. ( INBIO); Ditto, 1Ƌ 2♀ ( IBSP 166703).

Diagnosis. Males of Filistatoides insignis can be distinguished by the almost straight embolus, curving only in the distal area ( Figs 1C‒D View FIGURE 1 A ‒ D , 2A‒B View FIGURE 2 A ‒ H ) with paraembolic lamina presenting few projections ( Fig. 2E‒F View FIGURE 2 A ‒ H ). Females can be distinguished from F. polita by the long and narrow necks ( Figs 1B View FIGURE 1 A ‒ D , 8C‒D View FIGURE 8 A ‒ J. A ‒ D ).

Description. Male (INBIO). Carapace orange, with a dark spot behind the eyes. Chelicerae orange. Labium, endites, sternum and palps yellow. Legs orange with dark, sparse spots at joints. Abdomen black with dorsal, conspicuous chevrons ( Fig.1A View FIGURE 1 A ‒ D ). Total length 3.0. Carapace length 1.4, width 1.2. PME separated by their diameters. Palp measurements: femur 1.0 long, patella 0.4 long, tibia 0.5 long, 0.3 wide Leg measurements: I femur 2.5/ patella 0.6/ tibia 3.2/ metatarsus 2.7/ tarsus 1.3/ total 10.3; II 2.1/ 0.5/ 2.0/ 1.8/ 0.7/ 7.1; III 1.4/ 0.5/ 1.2/ 1.3/ 0.6/ 5.0; IV 1.8/ 0.6/ 1.6/ 1.9/ 0.8/ 6.7. Palp: tibia longer than bulb (including embolus), enlarged in distal area ( Figs 1C‒D View FIGURE 1 A ‒ D , 8A‒B View FIGURE 8 A ‒ J. A ‒ D ). Embolus with pronounced ventral distal groove and paraembolic lamina with few projections ( Fig. 2E‒F View FIGURE 2 A ‒ H ). Abdomen 1.4 long.

Female (INBIO). Coloration as in male, except the pedipalps are reddish and the abdomen with gray transverse chevrons. Total length 4.5. Carapace length 2.2, width 1.7. PME separated by almost half their diameters. Palp measurements: femur 1.4 long, patella 0.6 long. Leg measurements: I femur 2.5/ patella 0.7/ tibia 2.2/ metatarsus 1.7/ tarsus 1.1/ total 8.2; II 2.0/ 0.5/ 1.9/ 1.7/ 0.8/ 6.9; III 1.6/ 0.6/ 1.4/ 1.4/ 0.6/ 5.6; IV 2.1/ 0.7/ 2.0/ 1.7/ 0.9/ 7.4. Abdomen 2.5 long. Spermathecae with enlarged bases, sometimes separated ( Fig. 8C‒D View FIGURE 8 A ‒ J. A ‒ D ), with round receptacles ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 A ‒ D ).

Natural history. Specimens were collected in crevices in dry areas in the littoral region of Iztapa. Some specimens were associated with abandoned buildings.

Distribution. Known only from Guatemala ( Fig. 22 View FIGURE 22 A).
