Note. Trichilia microstachya , T. microphyllina and T. sebastianopolitana , which I consider to be conspecific, have not been recollected. Their taxonomic position and variation is discussed in Fl. Neotrop. 28: 208 (1981).

Relationships. The morphological variation of this species has been discussed at length (FN28: 207–208 (1981)) and on the basis of the meagre collections available at the time, a broad species concept was adopted. Relatively few additional collections have accumulated since 1981 and it is still not clear whether one or several species should be recognized. The limited ITS data (2 accessions) suggests that more than one species is present, as they are placed widely apart on the tree, but further material, both morphological and DNA, needs to be included before this can be resolved satisfactorily.
