Abbreviated Description. Indumentum of dense, crisped tomentose or villose simple hairs; leaflets dimorphic, 5–11, with 1 pair of greatly reduced leaflets at base of petiole, alternate to opposite, 6.5 × 1.6–10 × 4 cm, oblong elliptic or oblanceolate, bullate, margin revolute, with dense pubescence on midrib and veins, inflorescence 2–4.5 cm long, a small thyrse, petals 5, 5–5.5 mm long, fused for 1/3–2/3 their length, valvate, filaments completely fused in a staminal tube, anthers 9–10, nectary absent, ovary 3-locular, locules with 2 collateral ovules, pubescent, capsule 0.7–2.5 cm long, 1.2–1.4 cm broad, 3-valved, ellipsoid, densely tomentose, seed solitary, almost completely surrounded by a fleshy arillode.
Field Characters. Tree to 30 m high with greenish-white flowers, mature fruit brown, containing a seed with a red arillode. Flowering recorded in May and August, mature fruit in August and February.
Distribution & Ecology. Eastern coastal Brazil from Ceará southwards to Rio de Janeiro, mostly in lowland rain forest but ascending to 1000 m elevation in ‘mata de cipo’ in Bahia.
