Type species: Asthenarus crassifemur Thomson, 1889 [placed by Roman (1910) as a junior subjective synonym of Asthenara socia (Holmgren, 1857) ]. Monobasic, included in Asthenarus by Thomson (1889).
Asthenarus Thomson, 1889: 1437 . Unjustified emendation.
Diagnosis. Asthenara can be distinguished from all other genera of Pionini by the combination of the following characters: large lower tooth of mandible; short malar space; sharp notaulus; prepectal carina complete, its upper end on front margin of mesopleuron; areolet absent; Cu1 just distad of basal vein very weakly intercepted; transverse basal groove of propodeum not so deep as in other groups of Pionini ; first abdominal segment without glymma, with narrow and long petiole.
