Original description: Aphanius mento striptus Goren, 1974: 99 View in CoL [Rosh Hanikra, springs near Amiqam, Israel; holotype: SMNHTAU 3280].—Syrian synonyms: Aphanius striptus Goren, 1974 View in CoL .—Revisions: Freyhof & Yoğurtçuoğlu (2020: 437).—Illustration: Goren (1974: fig. 27) as Aphanus mento striptus .
Status in Syria. First record from Syria by Freyhof & Yoğurtçuoğlu (2020: 437).—Syrian material: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Syria: south-western Syria.—Distribution in River Basin: 3-Desert, 5- Barada & Awaj, 6-Coastal, 7-Al-Yarmouk.—General distribution: South Asia: Middle East: Israel and southwestern Syria.—Distribution in Ecoregion: 438- Jordan River, 440-Arabian Interior.—Habitat: This species inhabits a wide range of springs, streams, and wetlands. Freshwater.
Economic importance. No commercial importance. Has potential to be used as aquarium fish.
Conservation. Conservation status in Syria: Unknown.—IUCN: NE (2023).—Threats:Unknown.—High sensitivity to human activities.—Keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—High priority for conservation action.
