Taxonomy. Original description: Barbus kersin Heckel, 1843a: 1049 View in CoL [59] [ Syria; syntypes: NMW 54212-13 (1, 4), 54215 (1); SMF 610 (1), ZMB 3237 (1)].—Syrian synonyms: None.—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Esmaeili (2021: 306, fig. 17.8).

Status in Syria. Recorded from Syria in original description by Heckel (1847: 212); subsequently reported by Gruvel (1931); Beckman (1962: 87); Ali (2003); Taha (2005) as Barbus kersin .—Syrian material: NMW, SMF, ZMB, MSL.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Syria: Euphrates; Khabur and Tigris River basins.—Distribution in River Basin: 1-Dajleh & Khabour, 2-Euphrates & Aleppo.—General distribution: Asia Minor and Middle East: Euphrates and Tigris River basins ( Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran).—Distribution in Ecoregion: 441-Lower Tigris & Euphrates, 442-Upper Tigris & Euphrates.—Habitat: This species inhabits large to medium-sized rivers, but habitats are poorly known. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Commercially important.

Conservation. Conservation status in Syria: Unknown.—IUCN: DD ( IUCN 2023).—Threats: There are many threats in the area but it is unknown how and if the species is affected.—Low sensitivity to human activities.— Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
