Sonerila wallichii Bennett (1844: 215)

Lectotype (first step designated by Giri and Nayar [1984: 177]; second step designated here):— INDIA. s.loc., s.d., Wallich 4096 (barcode K000867657 [image!]; isolectotype: barcode K001038122 [image!]) Fig 4 .

Nomenclatural notes:—Wight and Arnott (1834: 321) described Sonerila rheedii citing Wallich No. 4096 and Rheede’s (1689: t. 65) illustration in the protologue. Since Wallich No. 4096 and Rheede t. 65 are taxonomically different, Bennett (1844: 215) described S. wallichii based on Wallich 4096. Giri and Nayar (1984: 177) also considered S. rheedei (as S. rheedii ) and S. wallichii as quite distinct and cited Rheede’s illustration as the type of S. rheedei . Deepthikumari and Pandurangan (2014: 72) corrected the orthography of the name as S. rheedei Wall. ex Wight & Arn.

Giri and Nayar (1986: 177) cited “Wall. List. No. 4096 (K)” as the type of S. wallichii , which constitute only first-step lectotypification. There are two relevant type sheets at K [K000867657!, K001038122!] which bears “Wall. List. No. 4096”. The sheet K000867657 has an entire plant with an inflorescence and two separate inflorescences is designated here as the second step lectotype.
