Absidia cornuta D.X. Lima, C. A. de Souza, H.B. Lee & A.L. Santiago, sp. nov. FIG. 3 View FIGURE 3
Mycobank number: MB 833216
Etymology— cornuta . Referring to the two (rarely three) projections on the columellae.
Colony initially white, becoming brownish gray (MP 15C2), covering the Petri dish (9 cm diam.) and reaching the plate lid (1.5 cm alt.) in some areas after four days at 25°C on MEA; reverse cream (MP 12H3). Odorless. Sporangiophores (65–) 70–250 (–300) × 2.5–5.0 µm, erect or slightly bent, smooth-walled and hyaline, growing along the stolons and terminally, solitary or usually in whorls of 2–6 (–8), these frequently single-branched, and these branches sometimes branched again (up to five times), often with a septum below the sporangium. Stolons smooth-walled and hyaline, up to 5–10 µm diam. Rhizoids hyaline branching and finger-like. Sporangia pyriform to subglobose, smooth-walled, 15–35 µm diam, with funnel shaped apophysis. Columellae mostly subglobose, 9.5–25 × 7.2–21.5 µm diam, some conical 7–17 × 6–15 µm diam, smooth-walled or with one or two projections on its central part, rarely with three projections; collar sometimes present. A solitary projection is usually present in subglobose columellae, up to 7.5 × 1.2–2.5 µm, and two (rarely three) projections are usually present in conical columellae, up to 4.5 × 1.5–2 µm; these projections may arise separated at the base or fork. Sporangiospores (3–) 4.5–6 (–7.5) × 1.5–2 (–3.5) µm, smooth-walled, cylindrical, slightly constricted in the center. Chlamydospores absent. Zygospores not observed.
Habitat: soil
Distribution: Pernambuco, Brazil.
Specimen examined: BRAZIL, Pernambuco, Garanhuns (08°58′45.1′′S, 036°32′14.5′′W), soil., 2018, D.X. Lima (URM 93639 – holotype, ex-type culture – URM 6100).
Media and temperature: On MEA: at 15°C—slow growth (6 cm in 192 h); at 20°C—good growth (9 cm in 96 h) and good sporulation; at 25°C—good growth with excellent sporulation (9 cm in 96 h); at 30°C—slower growth than at 25°C (9 cm in 144 h) and good sporulation; at 35°C—lack of growth. The growth of A. cornuta on PDA was slower than on MEA, with low sporulation at all temperatures.
