= Jambosa mappacea Korthals (1847: 200) View in CoL . = Syzygium mappaceum (Korth.) Merrill & L.M. Perry (1939: 164) View in CoL . Type citation: “Crescit in cultis Banjarmassing: Borneo”. Type:— INDONESIA. Kalimantan, loc. incert., Korthals s.n. (holotype L![barcode L0009653]; isotype L! [barcode L0638268]).

Distribution:— India [Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, West Bengal], Bangladesh, Bhutan, Malesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam; 100‒ 500 m.

Notes:— Eugenia formosa was named based on original material from ‘Moalmyne’ (=Moulmein, now Mawlamyine) and ‘Attran in Martabania’ (Martaban, now Mottama or Moke Ta Ma), but the only specimen located has been Wallich Catalogue Number 3609 from ‘Moalmyne’. Ashton (2011) cited this as the holotype but, although these appear localities to be nearby, the protologue suggest that there are at least two elements. We have therefore chosen the Wallich specimen at Kew as lectotype.

Ashton (2011) listed a number of names, based on Malesian specimens, as synonyms. We only include Syzygium mappaceum here, but it should be noted that Merrill & Perry (1939) were doubtful that it is conspecific with Eugenia formosa due to the absence of records from Peninsular Malaysia and to differences in inflorescence.
