Torneutes lansbergei View in CoL was described by Thomson (1865) based on a single female specimen from Surinam.

Bates (1879) proposed the monotypic genus Xenambyx , with X. laticauda Bates, 1879 , also based on one specimen, probably female, from Guatemala.

Franz (1954) described Xenambyx laticauda meridionalis based on specimens collected in Brazil (type locality: Mato Grosso) , Colombia, and Venezuela.

Martins and Monné (1980) transferred Torneutes lansbergei Thomson to Xenambyx and, at the same time, considered Xenambyx laticauda Bates and Xenambyx laticauda meridionalis Franz as its junior synonyms. They also commented that possibly two subspecies could be considered: X. lansbergei lanbergei and X. lansbergei laticauda .

Monné (1994) recorded two subspecies: Xenambyx lansbergei lanbergei ( Thomson, 1865) and Xenambyx lansbergei laticauda Bates, 1879 .

The examination of more material together with color photographs of Thomson’s (MNHN) ( Fig. 2 View Figs ) and Bates’ (BMNH) ( Fig. 3 View Figs ) type specimens, led us to consider that the subspecies are mere variations within the species without geographic distinction.
