The overall relationships along the backbone of the phylogeny are closely in line with recent phylogenetic hypotheses for Odonata using smaller, Sanger-based, molecular datasets with a similarly sized or larger taxon sample ( Bybee et al., 2008; Carle et al., 2015, 2008; Dijkstra et al., 2014; Letsch et al., 2016 ab). Our hypothesis differs in that nodal support, both traditional and new approaches, give robust phylogenetic support across the topology ( Fig. 2 View Fig ). Further, our hypothesis includes nearly all major lineages of Odonata and is not only the largest molecular phylogeny to date, but the most phylogenetically inclusive hypothesis of Odonata classification. What follows is a more detailed discussion for superfamily or superfamily-level groups across the topology.
