Distribution: Throughout the northern part of the palearctic region, from Western Europe to Japan and Korea, Taiwan. [2b]

Hosts: Usually in Pinus (Pinaceae) , but sometimes also in Larix and Picea .

Biology: Various aspects of the biology have been studied by Annila (1977), Chararas (1962), Martikainen et al. (1996), Peltonen and Helioväara (1999), Väisänen and Helioväara (1994). Gibb et al. (2006b) and Johansson et al. (2006) have investigated the effect of stand type, log treatment and site on abundance in Sweden. Associated blue-stain fungi are listed by Kirisits (2004).
