status

123. Xyleborus volvulus (Fabricius)

Bostrichus volvulus Fabricius, 1775: 454 .

Distribution: Circumtropical. Recorded from Taiwan as its synonym, X. torquatus Eichhoff , in timber imported to Japan ( Schedl 1966a; Nobuchi 1967). [6]

Hosts: Strongly polyphagous ( Browne 1961; Schedl 1963 as X. torquatus ).

Biology: The biology closely resembles that of X. perforans (see above).

Taxonomy: This species is doubtfully distinct from X. perforans (see above). In the Oriental region, it has usually been recorded as Xyleborus torquatus . Wood and Bright (1992) consider that reports of the species from Southeast Asia to the Southwest Pacific probably refer to X. perforans . Molecular studies are needed to resolve the taxonomic problems involved.
