Type material. Lectotype designated herein: KM Inv. No. F /1125, Maria Dreieichen ( Austria), SL: 28.5 mm, MD: 10.6 mm, illustrated in Schaffer (1912a, pl. 49, fig. 9), figs 22B 1 –B 3 . Paralectotype: KM Inv. No. F /1126, Maria Dreieichen ( Austria), illustrated in Schaffer (1912a, pl. 49, fig. 10). The specimen is lost .
Revised description. Shell medium-sized, solid, moderately broad fusiform with high conical spire; apical angle 34°. Protoconch and early teleoconch whorls not preserved. Spire whorls with moderately swollen, indistinctly beaded subsutural collar, weakly concave mid-whorl, and prominent, coarsely beaded suprasutural cord. Suture narrowly but deeply incised, undulating below beads. Last whorl 55% of total height, poorly delimited subsutural collar with ten weakly pointed tubercles, concave subsutural ramp, roundly angled at shoulder and peribasal cord. Base moderately constricted, concave. Siphonal fasciole poorly delimited, of moderate length, slightly twisted. Three primary spiral cords, adapical with large rounded, slightly opisthocline tubercles delimiting shoulder, abapical narrower delimiting base, third intercalated at mid-whorl of similar width to peribasal cord. Weaker irregular cords over base and siphonal fasciole. Close-spaced axial growth lines cover surface.Aperture moderately wide, pyriform. Outer lip not thickened, smooth within. Anal sinus deep, moderately wide, asymmetrically V-shaped, with apex below subsutural collar in deepest part of subsutural concavity. Siphonal canal moderately long, narrow, slightly deflected to the left, weakly notched at tip. Columella weakly excavated, slightly twisted at fasciole, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus thin, adherent, poorly delimited from the base.
Discussion. Schaffer (1912a) established this species as subspecies of Megaclavatula asperulata ( Lamarck, 1822) , which differs by its more delicate sculpture on the early teleoconch whorls, the presence of prominent spiral cords on the spire whorls, spinose tubercles on the subsutural collar, and a shorter last whorl. In view of the poor preservation of the early whorls, placement in Megaclavatula is tentative and will need confirmation.
Paleoenvironment. The occurrence at Maria Dreieichen ( Austria) suggests shallow inner neritic to lagoonal environments (own data).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Eggenburgian (early Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Maria Dreieichen ( Austria) ( Mandic & Steininger 2003).
