DIAGNOSIS — This species is distinguished from N. alpestre by the light brown (almost orange) vertex contrasting strongly in color with the dark brown trabeculae (vertex and trabeculae same color in N. alpestre ), distinctly reticulate mesosoma (smooth mesosoma in N. alpestre ), scutellum behind each campaniform sensillum with a large, diffuse oval scutellar gland (small, compact gland in N. alpestre ) and ovipositor almost as long as metatibia (two-thirds as long in N. alpestre ).

DESCRIPTION — FEMALE: Body length 1434-1613 (n=4, card mounts). Color. Face, antenna except fl5, clava, and fore and middle legs, metatarsus, and petiole yellow-brown (Figure 2), fl6 and clava dark brown, vertex except trabeculae orange brown, trabeculae black, gaster and hind leg except tarsus dark brown. Head 400 wide; face with toruli touching transverse trabecula; mid ocellus normal, its greatest diameter 30. Face and vertex mat, with dense, raised reticulate

Mostly mat except dorsellum, metapleuron and propodeum smooth and shiny, mesoscutum with dense, distinct raised reticulate sculpture; scutellum with slightly raised reticulate sculpture anteriorly to fainter, engraved sculpture posteriorly, the sculpture forming concentric ovals around each large oval pitted scutellar gland with anterior margin almost in contact with each campaniform sensillum; pronotum and mesopleuron smooth and shiny, prepectus with reticulate sculture, mat. Wings. Fore wing length 2312 (n=1), width 678, length/width 3.41, longest marginal setae 416. Hind wing length 1368, width 28, longest marginal setae 274. Mesosoma. Petiole and gaster smooth and shiny. Ovipositor sheath length 719, 0.96 × metatibia length (751).

MALE: Similar to female except for color and antenna. Color. Antenna except scape and pedicel dark brown, scape light brown, pedicel yellow; face yellow brown, vertex almost black, same color as trabeculae, rest of head dark brown; mesosoma dark brown; legs yellow except tarsi and metatibia brown.
