Type species: Cernotina calcea Ross , original designation.

Diagnosis: Species in the genus Cernotina are unique in the family by the absence of a preapical foreleg spur, so the spur formula is 2,4,4. The maxillary palps each have subequal 1st and 2nd segments, each much shorter than the 3rd segment; the 3rd maxillary palp segment originates subapically on the lateral face of the 2nd segment. The forewings each have a closed discoidal cell and an open median cell, and apical forks 2, 4, and 5; the hind wings each have open discoidal and median cells and apical forks 2 and 5. The genus is restricted to the Neotropical and Nearctic Regions.
