This taxon was described from a single specimen collected in « Texas ». The holotype, a female in MHNP, is labelled «piceolus Texas C. Pilate [handwritten]/ Muséum Paris [handwritten]». Both labels appears to be of recent origin .

The specimen (SBL ¼ 5.2 mm; ABL ¼ about 5.8 mm) belongs to the agilis group and along with the lectotype of L. piciventris (see next entry) rank among the smallest members of the group. Only some specimens of L. accelerans , L. algidus and L. unilobus Allen have a SBL under 6.0 mm. Based on various structural details, the holotype of L. piceolus cannot be associated with any of the species mentioned. The wings are fully developed in the sole known specimen of L. piceolus . They are reduced in L. unilobus (one paratype studied) and along with L. icarus Will & Liebherr , from Virginia, they are the only brachypterous Loxandrus species in North America, though L. straneoi Will & Liebherr , from Mississippi, is dimorphic in this respect (Will and Liebherr 1998).
