Type species: Lysianassa costae Milne Edwards, 1830 , selected by Boeck, 1876
Genus diagnosis. Mouthparts forming a subquadrate bundle. Epistome and upper lip separated, differently produced, upper lip strongly dominant in size and projection, rounded. Mandible with ordinary incisor, molar simple, small, conicolaminate, setose; palp attached proximal to molar, article 1 small. Maxilla 1, inner plate without setae; palp 2-articulate, large. Inner and outer plates of maxilliped well developed, palp strongly exceeding the outer plate, dactylus well developed. Coxa 1, large and visible, not narrowed. Gnathopod 1 simple, carpus and propodus subequal in size, dactylus small. Gnathopod 2, propodus much smaller than carpus, propodus minutely subquelate. Uropod 2, inner ramus with or without notch. Uropod 3, peduncle elongate, rami subequal in size, outer ramus 1-articulate. Telson entire ( Barnard & Karaman, 1991).
Composition of the genus. The genus Lysianassa contains nine species: L. brasiliensis Dana, 1853 ; L. ceratina (Walker, 1889) ; L. cinghalensis (Stebbing, 1897) ; L. costae Milne Edwards, 1830 ; Lysianassa danai sp. nov.; L. insperata Lincoln, 1979 ; L. latipes Ledoyer, 1986 ; L. pilicornis (Heller, 1867) ; and L. plumosa Boeck, 1871 .
