Remarks

Bowman (1973) recognised two species of this relatively distinctive genus. Although both can be very abundant very little is known of their biology. Thurston (1976) provides some information on the vertical distribution and diurnal migration of H. longipes , and identified two size classes within a (presumed) single population. Shulenberger (1979) also provides some biological information for both species. Hyperioides longipes Chevreux, 1900 has been observed in association with the siphonophore Lensia conoidea ( Laval 1980) , but the host of the widespread, often abundant, H. sibaginis ( Stebbing, 1888) is not known. It is suspected that it will prove to be a siphonophore that is also widespread and relatively common (Bowman & McGuinness 1982).

Distributional information for species is provided by Bowman (1973), Bowman and McGuinness (1982), Vinogradov et al. (1982) and Zeidler (1998).

Species: Hyperioides sibaginis ( Stebbing 1888) ; H. longipes Chevreux, 1900 .
