Family Evaniidae Latreille, 1802 View in CoL
The world species have been catalogued by Deans (2005) and a key to world genera is provided by Deans & Huben (2003). Pagliano (1986) keyed the Palaearctic genera, but no modern treatment of the Palaearctic species exists. In identifying species we referred to the outdated key to the Palaearctic species in Kieffer (1912), but adapted to take into account our current knowledge based on, for example, Deans (2005). Currently, about 21 extant genera of Evaniidae are known, but estimates of species numbers vary from around 430–440 ( Deans 2005) to 580 ( Mullins et al. 2012; Žikić et al. 2016). Host records are summarized in LeBeck (1991) and Deans (2005). In Evaniidae the small abdomen has a distinct petiolus, but the remaining segments are strongly compressed. They are parasitoids of cockroaches ( Blattodea ).
