Figures 24 View FIGURE 24 A–D, 25 C–D

Notodasus kristiani García-Garza, Hernández-Valdez & León-González, 2009: 817 View in CoL –818, figs 5a–d, 8e.

Material examined. Oahu Island: Waianae outfall, Sta. ZR3, 21°25ʹ22.9ʺ N, 158°11ʹ51.1ʺ W, 35 m, Jun/2011 (1 on SEM stub); Mamala Bay, Sand Island outfall, Sta. 42, Aug. 2003 (1, BPBM R3610).

Description. Two specimens collected incomplete, 17–28 mm long, 1.0–2.0 mm wide for about 56–77 chaetigers. Color in alcohol pale yellow.

Prostomium conical with palpode; eyespots about 20 on either side, not arranged in rows. Proboscis not observed. Peristomium achaetous and slightly longer than anterior thoracic segments.

Thorax with 11 chaetigers ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 A); tessellated to chaetiger 9, smooth posteriorly and biannulate with deep intra-segmental grooves ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 A). First chaetiger biramous and thorax with short bilimbate capillaries only ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 A). Notopodia inserted dorso-laterally and neuropodia laterally. Lateral organs present throughout, between noto- and neuropodia but closer to notopodia on thorax and closer to neuropodia on abdomen ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 C). Genital pores not observed.

Transition between thorax and abdomen marked by change in shape of segments ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 A, B); first two abdominal segments biannulate with capillaries only and enlarged notopodial and superior neuropodial lobes ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 B); subsequent abdominal segments multiannulated with hooded hooks throughout ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 C). Abdominal noto- and neuropodia with separated glandular tori pads ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 C). Notopodial glandular tori pads fused on first 2–3 abdominal chaetigers and in separate lines posteriorly ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 B). Notopodia with about 25 hooded hooks per fascicle, neuropodia with about 80 hooks. Noto- and neuropodial hooks similar; hoods not extending beyond main fang ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 D). Hooks with long anterior shaft, bulbous node and multiple teeth; at least 4 rows above main fang with increasing number of teeth to about 10 on superior row. ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 D).

Branchiae not observed and reported to begin from chaetiger 51 in the original description.

Methyl green staining pattern. Thorax and first two abdominal segments stain darker than the following eight abdominal segments which have two darkly staining transverse bands separated by the unstained notopodial lobes and lateral organs ( Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 C); remaining abdominal segments stain lightly on dorsum ( Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 C, D).

Distribution. The type locality for this species is Varadero Beach, Guaymas Bay (Gulf of California) but it was also recorded from western coast of Baja California ( García-Garza et al. 2009) and it is reported for the first time in Oahu, Hawaii.

Remarks. The specimens found agree very well with the original description but differ in the extent to which the MG dorsal bands are present in the abdominal segments; about three chaetigers in the original description and eight chaetigers in the Hawaiian material ( Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 C, D). The posterior abdominal segments have similar bands but are more lightly stained ( Fig. 25 View FIGURE 25 D). Branchiae were not found although the specimen was incomplete and the original description states branchiae are present from chaetiger 51.
