Trachypteris André ex Christ, Neue Denkschr. Allg. View in CoL Schweiz. Ges. Gesammten Naturwiss. 36: 150. 1899.

= Saffordia Maxon, Smithsonian Misc. Collect. 61(4): 1. 1913.

Trachypteris View in CoL is unmistakeable by its dimorphic fronds-a basal rosette of entire, sterile leaves and erect, pinnate, fertile leaves. It is further characterized by anastomosing veins without included free veins, and sori also present between the veins. There are two species in South America, the second, T. induta (Maxon) R.M.Tryon & A.F.Tryon View in CoL , from Peru ( Tryon 1964, Tryon & Stolze 1989); a Madagascan species usually placed in Trachypteris View in CoL ( T. drakeana C.Chr. View in CoL ) may not be congeneric, and a fourth species, T. gilliana (Baker) Svensen View in CoL , from Minas Gerais and Bahia, Brazil, almost certainly does not belong in the genus, based on spore morphology ( Ramos-Giacosa et al. 2011).

Trachypteris View in CoL appears to be rather isolated phylogenetically-sister to certain elements in Cheilanthes View in CoL and Doryopteris View in CoL (Schuettpelz et al. 2007, Eiserhardt et al. 2011).
