Pityrogramma ebenea View in CoL (L.) Proctor, Brit. Fern Gaz. 9: 219. 1965.
= Acrostichum ebeneum View in CoL L., nom. cons., Sp. Pl. 2: 1071. 1753.
= Pityrogramma tartarea (Cav.) Maxon, Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. View in CoL 17(2): 173. 1913.
Range: —Antilles; central Mexico to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC); central Brazil.
Ecology: —Common; in open, rocky sites, on roadsides, landslides, rock walls, cliffs, and shrubby hillsides; 1400–3100 m.
Notes: —Proximal pinnae inequilateral, elongate on the basiscopic sides; farina white to pale yellow; distal pinnae and pinnules are perpendicular to their axes (vs. ascending in the other species). The blade dissection is generally coarser than in P. calomelanos and allies, and the blades are thicker-textured than in P. calomelanos .
The name P. ebenea was proposed for conservation over the often-used P. tartarea by Prado & Smith (2011).
