Range: —Greater Antilles; southern Mexico to Bolivia (BE, CH, CO, LP, PO, SC, TA), Chile, northern Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Ecology: —Very common; on open ground, especially in gravel, along rivers and streams, road borders, and irrigation ditches; 200–1900(–2600) m.

Notes: —A very distinctive fern of open, wet ditches, distinctive by having entire and proximally 3(5–7)-foliate pinnae distally. The species hybridizes with several other species in the genus, e.g., P. calomelanos , probably P. austroamericana , and with P. ochracea ; hybrids with the last have been named Gymnogramma herzogii Rosenst., Meded. Rijks-Herb. 19: 21. 1913.
