Range: — Mexico, Mesoamerica, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC).

Ecology: —Common; in montane forests, near river margins; (450–) 1600–3500 m.

Notes: —Blades ternate, 3-or 4-pinnate-pinnatifid; proximal pinnae pedicellate, the pedicels (0.5–5.5 cm long), not winged; stipes with spines; venation free; awns present on costae adaxially. Distinguished by the whitish prickles on the blade axes. Pteris coriacea Desv. , a related species, is known from Ecuador and Peru ( Tryon & Stolze 1989); Solomon 11375 (MO, not seen), from Bolivia, is cited as this species, but the identity needs verification.
