Argyrochosma nivea (Poir.) Windham, Amer. Fern J. View in CoL 77(2): 41. 1987.
= Notholena nivea (Poir.) Desv., J. Bot. Agric. 1: 93. 1813.
Range: —Andes from Ecuador to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, OR, PO, SC, TA), western Argentina.
Ecology: —Common; terrestrial in deciduous forests in arid intermontane valleys, often growing in open areas among rocks or on steep rocky walls; 1650–4500 m.
Notes: —Blades 3-pinnate; ultimate segments white-farinose abaxially, suborbicular to broadly elliptic; rhizome scales crispate. Apparently triploid, 2 n = 81, based on gametophytic mitotic counts, with agamic reproduction ( Sigel et al. 2011). Notholaena nivea var. oblongata Griseb. , perhaps also best treated as a distinct species, is known from southern Peru, northwestern and central Argentina, and southern Brazil, and may occur in Bolivia. According to de la Sota (1977), it differs from Argyrochosma nivea by: petioles light red-brown (vs. dark red-brown), blades 2-pinnate-pinnatisect, ultimate segments elliptic, rhizome scales not strongly crispate.
