Doryopteris patula Fée, Crypt. Vasc. View in CoL Brésil 2: 30, t. 89, fig. 2. 1873.
= Doryopteris arifolia Christ View in CoL in Schwacke, Pl. Nov. Mineir. 2: 25. 1900.
= Doryopteris majestosa Yesilyurt, Amer. Fern J. View in CoL 97(4): 212–219, 1–4. 2008.
Range: — Colombia; Bolivia ( CH, LP, SC, TA) and northwestern Argentina to Paraguay and southern Brazil.
Ecology: —Uncommon; terrestrial in semideciduous forests; 450–1450 m.
Notes: —Blades pinnatifid to 2-pinnate-pinnatisect; rhizomes short-creeping; petioles brown to dark brown, more or less terete, 2.5–3 mm thick; petiole scales lanceolate; buds present at the base of the blades; sterile blades adaxially with hydathodes; soral lines continuous in the sinuses; triploid.
This species has a tortuous nomenclatural history. It has been historically called D. nobilis (T.Moore) C.Chr. , but that species lacks buds, is larger, has lighter red-brown, sulcate petioles, and is restricted to eastern Brazil ( Yesilyurt 2008a). The species with buds at leaf bases was renamed Doryopteris majestosa Yesilyurt (2008a) , but that name is superfluous and illegitimate (IPNI, accessed 19 Feb 2016) because one of the paratypes cited by Yesilyurt (Kunert s.n.) is also the type of D. arifolia . This Kunert gathering appears to be a mixed collection, in at least one herbarium, because a sheet at US (sheet 691636, barcode 00142034), is a mixture of D. pentagona , D. lorentzii , and D. majestosa . The holotype of D. arifolia is at P: https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/p/item/p01248235. The type of D. patula is also at P: http://mediaphoto.mnhn.fr/media/1442446397716dAXLJkLyFqsZpgs5
