Doryopteris is recognized by the glabrous, usually pedate blades with marginal sori; some non-Bolivian species have simple or sagittate blades.A monophyletic genus of about 21 species, mostly in the Neotropics and especially in Brazil, but also with a few species in Madagascar and eastern Asia to New Guinea. Our treatment follows Yesilyurt (2005) and Yesilyurt et al. (2015); earlier, Tryon (1942) monographed the genus and included both Lytoneuron and Ormopteris in the circumscription.

Doryopteris is sister to Lytoneuron + Ormopteris ( Yesilyurt et al. 2015) , differing in having crenate pinna margins with short, regularly spaced sori, and, in some species, blackish blade margins. In this treatment, it includes Cassebeera , with type C. triphylla , as a synonym.
