Distribution: Central America; from southern Guatemala to northern Nicaragua (probably translocated), Atlantic and Pacific drainages; introduced in several basins in USA and Mexico; ( Nicaragua) Co, UI, WK (Atlantic) and Ch (Pacific); 5–319 masl; Sec, Pot. Occurrence and conservation status: Exo; LC (2020), population trend unknown. Literature: Fowler (1923: 31, as Cichlasoma motaguense —synonym; brief description, including information on distribution), Carr & Giovannoli (1994: 107, as C. motaguense — synonym; brief description, including information on distribution and ecology).
