N o t e: The hitherto unknown male of Philanthus flagellarius is characterized by a propodeal enclosure not clearly defined, it differs from the female only in having two yellow spots on the upper face and the flagellomere I is twice as long than its apical width.

The male of P. flagellarius differs from P. loeflingi in having yellow mandibles, yellow spots on the upper face, a small yellow spot on the tegulae and the coarsely rugose propodeal enclosure (The male of P. loeflingi has black mandibles, the interantennal spot is sharply tridentate, scutellum and metanotum are yellow and the propodeal enclosure is dull microscopically rugose or coriaceous).

The male of P. stygius differs from P. flagellarius in having the posterior ocelly separated from the eyes by a distance not greater than the diameter of one of the ocelli, black mandibles, and in most specimens the pronotal collar, the scutellum and the metanotum are yellow. Additionally, the propodeal enclosure is closely punctate or allmost reticulate ( P. flagellarius has the distance between the posterior ocelli and the eyes distinctly greater than the diameter of one of the ocelli, the mandibles are yellow and pronotal collar, scutellum and metanotum are black. Additionally, the propodeal enclosure is coarsely rugose).

The male of P. flagellarius differs from P. nigrohirtus in having white setae on face and vertex yellow mandibles and a propodeal enclosure coarsely rugose ( P. nigrohirtus has black setae on face and vertex, black mandibles and the propodeal enclosure punctate).
