26. Argyresthia (Argyresthia) cardiopetala , sp. nov. ( Figs. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 8 , 36 View FIGURES 36 – 43 , 105 View FIGURES 102 – 107 , 161 View FIGURES 158 – 161 , 217 View FIGURES 209 – 220 , 266 View FIGURES 265 – 267 )

Description. Adult ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 36 – 43 ) wingspan 10.5̄11.0 mm. Head pale yellowish white. Labial palpus white, mixed with gray on lateral surface. Antenna with scape yellowish white, pecten fuscous; flagellum grayish white, ringed with black. Foreleg blackish fuscous on inner surface, white on outer surface, tarsus blackish fuscous on distal part of each tarsomere; midleg gray on inner surface, tibia dotted with gray near base, at middle and on distal dorsally, tarsus gray on distal part of each tarsomere, remainder white; hindleg white except tibia blackish gray distally, tarsus blackish gray distally on each tarsomere. Thorax pale yellowish white; tegula dark grayish fuscous. Forewing ratio 5.0; ground color gray to dark gray, distal 1/3 densely covered with dark grayish-fuscous scales; costa with about six white transverse striae along basal 2/5, with a longitudinal rectangular dark grayish-fuscous streak from basal 2/5 to 2/3 as wide as 1/6 width of wing, with two larger dark grayish spots alternated with yellowish-white spots on distal 1/3; grayish-fuscous streak below basal half of fold; dorsal band white, extending to before tornus; dorsal fascia dark grayish fuscous, broad, from before middle of wing to near longitudinal costal streak; cilia yellowish white adjacent yellowish-white costal spot, blackish fuscous around apex, gray on termen and near tornus. Hindwing and cilia uniformly gray. Abdomen blackish gray dorsally, gray ventrally.

Venation ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ): Forewing with R1 originating from beyond basal 1/3 of upper margin of cell, R4 and R5 stalked; hindwing with M3 and CuA1 stalked.

Male genitalia ( Figs. 105 View FIGURES 102 – 107 , 161 View FIGURES 158 – 161 , 217 View FIGURES 209 – 220 ): Tuba analis shorter than width of valva. Socius covered with 15̄23 scale-like setae, bearing two long setae posteriorly ( Fig. 217 View FIGURES 209 – 220 ). Gnathos inflated distally, with eight long thick apical setae. Valva somewhat heart-shaped, widest at basal 1/3, dorsal margin concave near apex; a clump of thick setae in disc near ventral margin. Saccus 1.6 times as long as width of valva, with distal 2/3 linear, rounded apically. Phallus straight, 5.0 times as long as width of valva ( Fig. 161 View FIGURES 158 – 161 ). Second sternite with 12̄13 micro-setae in each row; eighth sternite Y-shaped. Coremata present.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 266 View FIGURES 265 – 267 ): Ovipositor 2.6 times as long as eighth segment. Anterior apophysis 3/5 length of posterior apophysis, bifurcate at distal 2/5, branches fused, forming ventral margin of ostium bursae. Lamella postvaginalis subrectangular. Antrum funnel-shaped, 2/7 length of eighth segment; ductus seminalis not observed. Corpus bursae oval, with dense micro-denticles on posterior 1/3; signum with basal 3/4 band-shaped, slightly widened from basal 2/3 to 3/4, with a transverse ridge beyond basal 3/4, then narrowed triangularly.

Distribution. China (Xinjiang).

Diagnosis. This new species is similar to A. (A.) curvativa in the male genitalia. It can be separated from the latter by the forewing having a longitudinal dark grayish-fuscous streak extending from the costal 2/5 to 2/3 and a dark grayish fuscous dorsal fascia from before the middle of the wing extending nearly to the longitudinal costal streak, and in the male genitalia by the saccus 1.6 times as long as the width of the valva. Argyresthia (A.) curvativa lacks a longitudinal streak along the costa and has a blackish gray dorsal fascia extending from the middle of the wing to above the upper angle of the cell, and the saccus is shorter than the width of the valva in the male genitalia.

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin cardiopetalus, referring to the heart-shaped valva in the male genitalia.
