Nilus ornatus Berland 1924: 239 , figs 183–185 (description of female; holotype, female, 1 immature female paratype and 5 juvenile paratypes from Loyalty Islands, Ouvea, Fayaoue, V.1912, NHMB 1003a, examined).

Note. The designations of the lectotype and paralectotypes (sub paratypoids) by Forcart (1961) are not valid according to articles 73.1.1. and 73.1.4 of ICZN (1999:) in this case, since Berland (1924: 239) indicated “ type ” behind the only adult female and illustrated this specimen and therefore the holotype is fixed by original designation.

Diagnosis. Small sized spiders with body length of about 9.1 mm (females) and colour pattern A ( Figs 150– 152 View FIGURES 147 – 152 ). First winding of internal duct system small (in contrast to almost all other congenerics currently known), widely spaced similar to that of D. fusca , but with distinctly smaller vulval pocket ( Figs 159–161 View FIGURES 153 – 161 ).

Redescription. Female (holotype). PL 4.1, PW 3.1, AW 1.9, OL 5.0, OW 3.2. Eye diametres: AME 0.22, ALE 0.25, PME 0.25, PLE 0.24. Eye interdistances: AME–AME 0.14, AME–ALE 0.07, PME–PME 0.16, PME–PLE 0.29, AME–PME 0.21, ALE–PLE 0.37, clypeus AME 0.25, clypeus ALE 0.26. Leg and pedipalpus measurements: pedipalpus 4.8 (1.5, 0.7, 1.0, -, 1.6); leg I 14.1 (4.0, 1.8, 3.6, 3.3, 1.4); leg II - (3.9, 1.8, 3.4, -, -); leg III 11.9 (3.5, 1.5, 2.8, 2.8, 1.3); leg IV 14.5 (4.2, 1.6, 3.4, 3.7, 1.6); leg formula 413. Spination: palp: femur 141/131, patella 120, tibia 1201 (distal dorsal spine weak), tarsus 1013; Femur I 334, II 335, III 335/334, IV 232/331; Patella I 020/021, II 0 21, III–IV 121, Tibia I 1018, II 1026, III 2226, IV 2225 /2227; Metatarsus I 2027, III–IV 3037. Chelicerae with 3 anterior (median largest) and 3 equally sized posterior teeth. Palpal claw with 12 teeth, retrolateral leg claw I with 14 teeth. Copulatory organ as in diagnosis. Epigynal field wider than long, with distinct trilobate anterior margin, with one pair of slit sense organs antero-laterally. Anterior part of middle field with very deep impression. Head of spermathecae long, reaching anterior part of first winding ( Figs 159–161 View FIGURES 153 – 161 ). Colour in ethanol ( Figs 150–152 View FIGURES 147 – 152 ): yellowish brown with colour pattern A. Dorsal prosoma with 2 distinct broad bright submarginal bands and a bright narrow median line between fovea and eyes. Sternum and ventral coxae yellowish brown and ventral opisthosoma, without pattern. Gnathocoxae yellowish brown, brighter distally; labium yellowish brown with white distal lip. Chelicerae yellowish brown. Palp and legs yellowish brown, darker distally. Especially femora with vivid pattern, tibiae distally with dark patch. Dorsal opisthosoma with characteristic dark patch in anterior half and a lighter brown folium, the latter with undulating lateral margins in posterior half. Male: unknown.
