Type repository. DAM.

Etymology. The species is named in honour of István Báthori (Stefan Batory) (1533–1586), ruling prince of Transylvania (1571–1575), and later eminent king of Poland (reigned: 1575–1586). He is a strong historic link between Hungary and Poland. The specific name symbolizes the friendship between the two nations.

Relation to host. Leaves of Tilia cordata . Eriophyidae : Eriophyes tiliae (Pagenstecher) . Tarsonemidae : Dendroptus flexus (Livshitz, Mitrofanov and Sharonov) , Tarsonemus nodosus Schaarschmidt ; Stigmaeidae : Zetzellia mali (Ewing) ; Winterschmidtiidae : Czenspinskia transversostriata (Oudemans) [underside of leaves] (Ripka et al. 2005).

Tilia platyphyllos . Tetranychidae : Eotetranychus tiliarium (Hermann) ; Eriophyidae : Eriophyes tiliae (Pagenstecher) ; Phytoseiidae : Euseius finlandicus (Oudemans) ; Tydeidae : Lorryia pulchra (Oudemans) [underside of leaves].

Acer campestre . Eriophyidae : Aceria cephalonea (Nalepa) , Aceria macrochela (Nalepa) , Shevtchenkella serrata (Nalepa) , Tegonotus pseudoobtusus Petanović ; Tarsonemidae : Dendroptus flexus (Livshitz, Mitrofanov and Sharonov) , Dendroptus willmanni (Schaarschmidt) , Tarsonemus stammeri Schaarschmidt ; Phytoseiidae : Paraseiulus talbii (Athias-Henriot) , Neoseiulella tiliarum (Oudemans) ; Stigmaeidae : Zetzellia mali (Ewing) ; Winterschmidtiidae : Czenspinskia transversostriata (Oudemans) [lower side of leaves].

Differential diagnosis. The new species resembles Lorryia elinguis (Kuznetzov) collected from Cornus mas in Crimea (Kuznetzov & Livshitz 1973), although is slightly larger. Lorryia bathorii sp. nov. has three setal types: spindle-like, rod-like and club-like (gradually broadened distally, blunt), whereas Lorryia elinguis has two kinds of setae: spindle-like (sharp) and rod-like (equally broad and rounded distally). Differences between these two species are provided in Table 5 View TABLE 5 .

Description. MALE (holotype). Organotaxy typical for genus (Kaźmierski 1989b). Idiosoma. Body oval, yellowish. Length 230, width 160 (225–230/ 155–160 in 5 male paratypes). Dorsal cuticle covered with tubercled striae. Tubercles in shape of small rectangles and of flat semi-circles. No reticulation. Ornamentation type “ Tydeus ” (Kaźmierski 1998b). Eyes not observed. Bothridial setae (bo) relatively long, whip-like and smooth. The remaining setae represent three types: setae ro and la are spindle-like, sharp, setae c1, c2, d1 and e1 are rod-like, blunt, whereas f1, f2, h1, h2 and ps1 are club-like, broadened and rounded distally. All of them are slightly serrated. Length of setae as follows: bo 38, ro 13, la 13, ex 14, c1 12, c2 13, d1 12, e1 14, setae (f) and (h), as well ps1 —16. Setae ps 1 set almost terminally (slightly ventrally). Smooth and acute setae ps2 (10 long) situated off pseudanal valves. Distances: c1–c1 39, d1–d1 36, e1– e1 73, f1–f1 25, h1–h1 29, ps1–ps1 12, f1–h1 21. 3 pairs of lyrifissures. Coxal organ (cg) oval. Venter striated, longitudinal between metasternal setae. Genital setal formula: eu 4, ge 6, ag 4 (males), and (0-6-4) in females. Epimeral formula: (3-1-4-2). Gnathosoma. Visible from above. Cheliceral stilettos similar in length as palptarsus. Palpal tarsal eupathidium slightly bent, gradually narrowing distally, and terminating into a fork. Seta d forked distally. Palpal organotaxy: 6+ ω -2-2. Measurements: stiletto 17–18, palpal femuro-genu 28/14, df 29, dg 20, t’ 19, t’’ 10, palpal tarsus 19/6, (pζ) 8. Seta ba vestigial, nearly 3 long. Legs. Setation: I (8+ ω -3+ k’’ -3-3-1), II (6+ ω -2-2-3-0), III (5-2-1-2-1), IV (5-2-1-1-0). Tarsus+apotele I: length 32, width 13, height 15. Solenidion ωI narrowly oval in outline, not exceptionally long (9), but reaching bases of tectal setae. Length of ft’ 22, ft’’ζ 30. Forked famulus k’’ 4. Solenidion ωII almost 3. Empodial hooks (om) very small, toothshaped, situated at base of empodium.

FEMALE (paratype). Body length 235, width 160. Remaining 9 females: body length 230–240, width 155– 160. Similar in general appearance, shape and details of male with exception of genital region.

TRITONYMPH. Body length 200, width 145.

Lorryia ocellata (Kuznetzov, 1972)

This species was described by Kuznetzov (1972a) on the basis of a single holotype female collected from Hibiscus syriacus in Nikitsky Botanical Garden, Crimea. It is characterized by the ornamentation type “ Paralorryia ”, the striation with rectangular tubercles, the acute dorsal body setae with relatively strong, but sparsely distributed serrations, and by the presence of the lens-like pattern between setae la and ex.

In Hungary, L. ocellata was found in eight localities and on eight host-plants, which are given below. In the case of first three localities, the specimens were previously determined as Lorryia cf. woolleyi sp. n. I (Ripka & Kaźmierski 1998 a, page 409). The remaining ones were recorded under their proper name (L. ocellata) (Ripka et al. 2002, page 273).
