Diagnosis. Megalota festuca sp. nov. is distinguished from all other species in the genus by the shape of the uncus (basal half narrow, long and slender, apical half distinctive divergent, oblong and drooping), and enlarged, long pendant socii.
Description. Head ( Figs. 5–6 View FIGURES 5–6 ): Lower frons yellowish white, upper frons light brown; vertex, pronotal collar and mesonotum brown mixed with light brown; posterior crest dark brown; labial palpi porrect, first segment white, second segment widened apically, basal half white to light brown with a dark brown mark dorsally, apical half light brown with transverse dark brown band from beyond dorsomedially extending oblique, widened to ventroapically, third segment light brown; antenna brown, reaching to middle of forewing. Thorax: Pronotal collar, mesonotum and posterior crest pale brown; tegulae pale brown with basal 1/3 dark brown; inner side of hind tibia with a tuft of yellowish white hair pencils extending from base to over half length ( Fig. 9). Forewing subrectangular, length 9.3–12.6 mm in male ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3–4 ) (n = 43), 10.7–13.4 mm in female ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 3–4 ) (n = 6); costal margin evenly curve, with reddish brown scales (light brown in female) along costa especially apical half; termen straight; costal strigulae well developed, whitish marks separated by blackish streaks ( Figs. 1–4 View FIGURES 1–2 View FIGURES 3–4 ); ground color dark grey, paler near termen, with a large dark brown patch extending from wing base to apical 4/5 of wing length, and from dorsum to over half of wing width, distal part of patch broken by ground color, dorsal margin irregular, outer margin edged with yellowish white narrow line, represented by a large U-shaped dark brown patch in resting posture ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1–2 ), upper of patch with long, irregular, sinuate strip extending from near wing base to apical 4/5 of wing length at between M 1 and M 3 (indistinct in female), middle of costa with a slightly sinuate band extending obliquely to termen at between M 2 and CuA 1, dark brown mixed with reddish brown (dark brown mixed with brown in female), wing apex with dark brown mark, with diffuse, short transverse dark brown striae alternated with light brown scales along termen between CuA 1 to tornus; fringe scales with inner row brownish red and outer row brown extending from wing apex to tornus except light brown scales between CuA 2 to 1A+2A; underside light brown with white spots on costa and termen. Hindwing brown, slightly paler to base; anal margin modified in male, thickened edge, light brown ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7–8 ); underside light brown with thickened, folded anal margin, yellowish white in male ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7–8 ).
Abdomen: Male genitalia ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10–11 ) with tegumen ovate; uncus distinct with basal half long and slender, apical half divided into two pendant oblong lobes, slightly narrowed to rounded apex, inner side with densely bristles reaching apex: socii forming large and long pendant lobe, rounded apex, densely setose; gnathos a weakly sclerotized band; vinculum moderately wide; juxta subtriangular; caulis very short, anellus wide, rounded cup-shaped surrounding base of phallus; phallus moderately long and wide, upper part sclerotized, dorsoapical half with short (variably sized) and strong denticles (8 in holotype) ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10–11 ) (4–14 in paratypes); dorsobasally with an oval costal process, apex with small group of short stout spines pointing inwardly, beneath surrounding with dense sockets reaching middle of lobe; apical part of sacculus with subtriangular lobe, projecting inwardly to middle of basal opening, with moderately dense setae; neck with shallowed excavation ventrally, moderately wide, lower part with a large patch of dense, long spiniform setae pointing ventrally; cucullus oblong ovate, rounded apex, pointing outwardly, densely setose at basal 1/3. Female genitalia ( Figs. 12–15 View FIGURES 12–15 ) with papillae anales densely setose; apophyses anteriores as long as apophyses posteriores; sternum 7 moderately sclerotized, posterior half with dense scale sockets, becoming more dense near posterior edge, posterior margin emarginated medially forming a wide, V-shaped, posterior edge sclerotized except medially; tergum 8 with dense scale sockets along posterior margin reaching triangular lateral extensions; ostium bursae round, located between sternum 7 and 8; sterigma moderately large surrounding ostium bursae ( Figs. 12–13 View FIGURES 12–15 ), lamella postvaginalis sclerotized, excavated dorsomedially produced into two rounded lobes with sclerotized edges projecting posteriorly, each lobe with a small patch of dense scale sockets dorsally, ventrally connected with membrane to weakly sclerotized, semicircular lamella antevaginalis; ductus bursae as long as of corpus bursae length, slightly widened to corpus bursae; colliculum forming two sclerites on opposite sides of ductus bursae beneath ostium bursae; ductus seminalis originating anterior 1/3 of ductus bursae; corpus bursae ovate with rather small scobination patch (= signum) which varies in size and number in different specimens ( Figs. 14–15 View FIGURES 12–15 ).
Distribution. Thailand (Uthai Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Kanchanaburi, Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo and Chaiyaphum province).
Etymology. The specific epithet ( festuca = stalk) refers to the basal half of uncus.
