Smicridea (Rhyacophylax) bifasciata sp. nov.

Figs 13–18 View FIGURES 13 – 14 View FIGURES 15 – 18

Adult male. Forewing length, 3.7–4.1 mm (n = 8). Color in alcohol brown. Antennae and legs brown. Setae on dorsal region of head brown to black. Forewings brown, each unmarked except pterostigma with gray mark, nigma and thyridial spots brown ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13 – 14 ). Anterolateral glandular processes of sternum V stout and short, length (0.32 mm) not surpassing length of this segment ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 13 – 14 ).

Male genitalia. Segment IX with anterolateral and dorsal margins slightly sinuous, ending in protuberant posterodorsal lobe in lateral view; bearing tiny spikes on narrow transverse band, in lateral and dorsal views ( Figs 15, 16 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). Tergum X lateral and anterior margins sclerotized, with short dorsolateral setae, divided 2/3 its length apicomesally ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). Inferior appendages dark gray in color, 2-segmented, basal segment long, with distal region slightly enlarged, distal segment short, 2/3 as long as basal segment, with round apex in dorsal view ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). Phallus with tubular phallobase, basal and median sections forming angle of 60o ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ), median region of phallotheca expanded and retracted, with 1 pair of sclerotized ribbon-shaped lateral parame spine in ribbon shape, their anterior and posterior ends with teeth ( Figs 15, 17, 18 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ). Internal sclerotized portion of ejaculatory duct, in lateral view, short (about ¼ phallus length), with bifid distal region, bearing 1 bifid hook distally in dorsal view, but in lateral view, this hook appearing single, small, pointed ( Figs 15, 17, 18 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ; endothecal membranes expanded laterally, with small spines ventrally and with dark lateral area; narrower endothecal membranes protruding beyond this expanded area ( Figs 15, 17 View FIGURES 15 – 18 ); dorsal periphalic membranes absent.

Female and immatures. Unknown.

Diagnosis. The male of S. bifasciata sp. nov. differs from those of the other species described in the subgenus by having the posterodorsal lobe of segment IX very protuberant; lateral processes of the phallotheca are elongated and sclerotized, ribbon-shaped, with the anterior and posterior ends bearing teeth; the distal region of the internal sclerotized portion of the ejaculatory duct is bifid; and the endothecal membranes have an expanded pre-apical region, laterally with dark areas and ventrally with spines.

Biology. Specimens of S. bifasciata sp. nov. were collected with a light trap placed over streams (n = 3) 2.5– 9.5 m in width, located in an area with preserved gallery forest in the Cerrado biome.

Distribution. Brazil, Mato Grosso State.

Etymology. The name bifasciata (Latin, bi = two and fascia = ribbon shape), refers to the 2 elongated ribbonlike structures laterally in the endothecal membranes at the end of the tubular phallobase, each bearing teeth on each end.
