status

Osmunda regalis View in CoL L., Sp. Pl. 2: 1065. 1753.

Range:— Southeastern Canada to Bolivia ( CH), Paraguay, and Uruguay; Antilles; Europe, Africa, and Madagascar.

Ecology:— Rare, known in Bolivia from a single collection; aquatic or terrestrial in swamps or along streams; 1820 m, sea level to 2200 m elsewhere.

Notes:— The American specimens, including those from Bolivia, belong to var. spectabilis (Willd.) A.Gray ; var. regalis occurs in the Old World. However, molecular work by Metzgar et al. (2008) suggests that these varieties may better be treated as distinct species because spectabilis appears to be more closely related to the Asian species O. lancea Thunb. and O. japonica Thunb. than to Old World and to New World O. regalis .
