Range:— Canada to Bolivia (LP) and Paraguay; Greater Antilles; southeast Asia.

Ecology:— Rare, known in Bolivia from two collections; aquatic or terrestrial in swamps or along streams; 1450–1900 m in Bolivia, sea level to 2800 m elsewhere.

Notes:— Fossil specimens of Osmundastrum identical to this species from the Upper Cretaceous in North America document an exceptional species longevity in this group of ferns ( Serbet & Rothwell 1999).
