Type material. Proteides antiope Plötz, 1882   was described based on the male holotype [specimen number 5039] from Pará [ Brazil] and one additional specimen from Colombia. The holotype is deposited at the ZMHU and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Holotypus Nr./ 5039/ Pará Sieber./ antiope Pl.   [?]/.

Plesioneura lamus Mabille, 1888   was described based on the female [holotype] from Óbidos [Pará, Brasil]. The holotype is deposited at the ZMHU and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Obidos Hhl./ 227./ Telem. lamus Mb.   ♀ / Phemiades amphion Hübn.   / HOLOTYPE ♀ Plesineura lamus Mabille 1888 G. Lamas   det. 2000/.

Telemiades antiope tosca Evans (1953)   was described based on one male [holo]type from Ega [Tefé], Amazonas [ Brazil], and on three males and one female from Iquitos, Peru and São Paulo de Olivença and Tefé, Amazonas and two males and four females from Pará, Brazil. The male holotype is deposited at the NHMUK and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Type [verso from the same label:] tosca Evans/ avitus Cram.   35 a D/ Ega. Hewitson Coll. 79–89. Eudamus avitus   . 1./ a 3 [label with the genitalia attached]/ 45/ BMNH(E) 1236492/.

Diagnosis. FW length: males 14–16 mm (n=31) and females 14–17 mm (n=7). Telemiades antiope   resembles T. atlantiope Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande   , sp. nov. but is distinguished by the following characters: smaller size; FW with cellular and discal hyaline spots with excavated margins; HW with darker submarginal spots; VHW with a darker spot on anal region; anterior projection of the saccus with anterior margin triangular; fultura inferior ventrally slightly expanded; dorsal opening of aedeagus 1/3 the length of aedeagus.

Variation. Specimens may vary in size and in the development of hyaline spots in FW.

Distribution. Telemiades antiope   occurs mainly in Amazon Forest areas, with records in Suriname, Peru, and Brazil (states of Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, and Maranhão). There are some scarce records in Atlantic Forest areas of the Brazilian states of Pernambuco and Paraíba.

Taxonomic discussion. Godman (1907) considered Proteides antiope Plötz, 1882   as a variation of Telemiades amphion   . Later, Mabille & Boullet (1912) synonymized P. antiope   (= antiopa   [sic]) with T. amphion   . This proposal was followed until Bell (1949) considered it a distinct species and altered its status. Although it resembles the species of the “ amphion   group”, T. antiope   differs phenotypically by lacking the costal spots in FW, in addition to the distinct morphology of the genitalia. Telemiades antiope tosca Evans, 1953   , syn. nov. has been treated as a subspecies. Evans (1953) interpreted the reduction of the discal spots in FW as a good character to separate T. antiope antiope   from T. a. tosca. A detailed study of the morphology of T. a. tosca and a comparison with specimens of T. a. antiope   (including holotype), has revealed that there is variability in the size of the discal spots in FW. For this reason, T. a. tosca is here interpreted as a new synonym of T. antiope   . Evans (1953) erroneously interpreted Telemiades lamus ( Mabille, 1888)   , syn. nov. as a synonym of T. avitus ( Stoll, 1781)   , probably due to the similarity between the females. However, T. lamus   is here considered a new synonym of T. antiope   , a hypothesis that has been corroborated after examination of the type material of both species.

Examined material. No data, 1 female (ZMHU).
