Telemiades pallidus Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande , sp. nov.

( Figs 46–49 View FIGURES 42–49 , 154 View FIGURES 153–154 , 190 View FIGURES 189–190 , 210 View FIGURE 210 )

Diagnosis. Telemiades pallidus Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande , sp. nov. is distinguished from T. penidas by the paler ground color, FW with smaller hyaline spots, harpe with dorso and ventral–distal processes slightly projected, and lamella antevaginalis with lateral asymmetrical expansions. Besides, T. pallidus sp. nov. has been recorded only in Atlantic Forest areas of the Brazilian states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, and São Paulo, while T. penidas occus in Amazonian areas.

Description. Head: frons brown with sparse yellow scales; vertex brown. Eyes surrounded by creamy and yellowish scales. Labial palpi with first and second segments dark brown and cream; third segment dark brown.Antennae dark brown; base of each segment cream; apical third ventrally cream; nudum of 25–27 segments.

Thorax: dorsally and ventrally dark brown and yellowish.

FW: length of males 19–21 mm (n=12) and females 22–24 mm (n=4). DFW ( Figs 46–48 View FIGURES 42–49 ): ground color dark brown in males and light brown in females; four contiguous hyaline spots, larger in females: two cellular (upper and lower), not fused in the proximal margin in males and fused in females; and two discal rectangular (M 3 –CuA 1 and CuA 1 –CuA 2), with excavated distal margin in M 3 –CuA 1 and separated in CuA 1 –CuA 2, as two distinct spots; three apical hyaline spots in R 3 –R 4, R 4 –R 5 and R 5 –M 1, the last smaller; two dark brown and squared spots in CuA 2 –2A, well marked in females.

DHW ( Figs 46–48 View FIGURES 42–49 ): ground color dark brown; four dark brown rounded discal spots in Sc+R 1 –Rs, discal superior, discal inferior and CuA 2 –2A; submarginal dark spots as an irregular band.

VFW ( Figs 47–49 View FIGURES 42–49 ): as DFW; paler below CuA 2.

VHW ( Figs 47–49 View FIGURES 42–49 ): as DHW; discal and submarginal spots more visible.

Abdome: dorsally and ventrally dark brown and yellowish.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 153–154 ): tegumen rounded, distal margin with two pairs of lateral apophysis with half size of uncus. Anterior projection os saccus triangular and anterior margin rounded. Uncus short about 1/3 of tegumen; distal margin slightly curved ventrally and with one pair of truncated lobes laterally. Valva rectangular, twice as long as wide; costa rectangular; harpe with dorso and ventro–distal process slightly projected; sacculus rectangular, about 1/3 than valva. Fultura inferior distally bifid, with distal margin and base rounded. Aedeagus cylindrical; insertion of manica in the middle of aedeagus; opening of ejaculatory bulb rounded; distal margin truncated, with a line of spines–like projections on the lateral left; opening for vesica right and lateral, about ½ of size of aedeagus; cornuti as two lines of sharp spines, the first with small spines and located at proximal region of aedeagus, and the second with developed spines located on central region of aedeagus.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 190 View FIGURES 189–190 ): tergum VIII rounded. Papilla analis covered by scales on apical third; posterior apophysis twice as longer than papilla. Lamella antevaginalis rectangular; distal margin concave at central region; lateral expansions rounded, asymmetrical, with irregular margins, and ventrally with a thin–like projections. Lamella postvaginalis with distal margin concave. Ductus bursae membranous, sclerotized proximally of ostium; corpus bursae membranous and globular, about twice the size of ductus, 2/3 of proximal region rough. Signa absent.

Distribution. Telemiades pallidus sp. nov. is recorded in Atlantic Forest areas of the Brazilian states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, and Paraná.

Etymology. The specific epithet is a reference to the paler color when compared with Telemiades penidas .

Taxonomic discussion. Despite the phenotypic similarity between T. pallidus sp. nov. and T. penidas , the geographical distribution of both species can be used to distinguish them. The first occurrs from Bahia to Paraná and the latter is in the Amazon. The possibility that T. pallidus sp. nov. is a subspecies of T. penidas (in view of their phenotypic similarity and allopatric distribution) should be discarded due to the significant differences in the morphology of both sexes. In addition, the possibility that T. pallidus sp. nov. is a variation of T. penidas can be discarded, since the morphological differences between the species are constant.
