Telemiades atlantiope Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande , sp. nov.
( Figs 54–57 View FIGURES 50–61 , 156 View FIGURES 155–157 , 192 View FIGURES 191–193 , 211 View FIGURE 211 )
Telemiades antiope antiope [misidentification]; Núñez B., 2008. Trop. Lep. Res. 18 (2): 80.—Francini et al., 2011. Revta bras. Ent. 55 (1): 67.
Diagnosis. Telemiades atlantiope Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande , sp. nov. resembles T. antiope but is distinguished by the following characters: larger wingspan; tegumen shorter; valva longer; saccus with anterior projection round- ed; fultura inferior slightly expanded ventrally; dorsal opening of aedeagus 2/3 the length of aedeagus. The distribution pattern in Atlantic Forest areas also differs T. atlantiope from the other species of “ antiope group”. However, the females of T. atlantiope and T. xantho are phenotypically similar and occurs in sympatry, but could be distinguished by the development of the apical hyaline spots in FW (larger in T. xantho ); by the dark spot in discal area in VFW in CuA 2 –2A (darker in T. xantho ) and by the absence of the submarginal band in VFW in R 5 –2A.
Description. Head: frons and vertex brown, with a few cream scales. Eyes surrounded by white scales. Labial palpi with first and second segments dark brown and cream; third segment dark brown. Antennae dark brown, base of each segment cream, apical third ventrally cream; nudum of 19–21 segments.
Thorax: dorsally dark brown; ventrally dark brown and cream.
FW: length of males 13–18 mm (n=45) and females 17–19 mm (n=33). DFW ( Figs 54, 56 View FIGURES 50–61 ): ground color dark brown covered by yellowish sparse scales; four hyaline spots: two cellular (upper and lower), the first shorter, semitriangular in males and rectangular in females, and two discal in M 3 –CuA 1 and CuA 1 –CuA 2, the first oval in males and triangular in females in M 3 –CuA 1 and the latter oval in males with distal margin slightly excavated and rectangular in females in CuA 1 –CuA 2; three apical hyaline spots in R 3 –R 4, R 4 –R 5 e R 5 –M 1 with same size; dark brown discal spot in CuA 2 –2A; dark brown submarginal spots in M 1 –M 2, M 2 –M 3, M 3 –CuA 1, CuA 1 –CuA 2 and CuA 2 –2A.
DHW ( Figs 54, 56 View FIGURES 50–61 ): ground color dark brown covered by yellowish sparse scales; four dark brown rounded spots in Sc+R 1 –Rs, upper cell, lower cell and CuA 2 –2A; submarginal dark brown spots as an irregular band in Rs–CuA 2.
VFW ( Figs 55, 57 View FIGURES 50–61 ): as DFW; paler below CuA 2.
VHW ( Figs 55, 57 View FIGURES 50–61 ): as DHW; discal and submarginal spots more visible; dark brown spot in anal region.
Abdome: dorsally dark brown; ventrally dark brown and cream.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 156 View FIGURES 155–157 ): tegumen rounded, distal margin with one pair of lateral apophysis with half size of uncus. Anterior projection of saccus triangular, anterior margin rounded. Uncus shorter, convex, about 1/3 the length of tegumen; distal margin with two lateral apophysis short and quadrate. Valva rectangular, twice as long as wide; costa rectangular; distal process of harpe triangular, with distal margin serrated and dorsal margin irregular; sacculus rectangular, about 1/3 the length of valva. Fultura inferior distally bifid, with distal margin rounded and ventral portion slightly expanded. Aedeagus cylindrical, sinuous on proximal half; insertion of manica in third proximal of aedeagus; opening for ejaculatory bulb rounded; distal margin truncated; opening for vesica dorsal, about 2/3 of size of aedeagus; cornuti as numerous spines, disposed in lines.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 192 View FIGURES 191–193 ): tergum VIII rounded; papilla analis covered by scales on apical third; posterior apophysis twice as longer than papilla. Lamella antevaginales rectangular. Lamela postvaginalis rectangular, distal margin slightly concave, forming two lobes. Ductus bursae membranous, sclerotized proximally of ostium, and with a sclerotized thin–like plate with 2/3 of its central length; corpus bursae membranous and globular, with same size of ductus; 2/3 of proximal region rough. Signa absent.
Variation. As in T. antiope , some specimens varies in wingspan and in the development of hyaline spots in FW.
Distribution. Telemiades atlantiope sp. nov. occurs in Atlantic Forest areas, with records from the Brazilian states of Pernambuco to Santa Catarina, and in Missiones, Argentina.
Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the Atlantic Forest Biome, where this species is registered, in addition to its relationship to T. antiope .
Taxonomic discussion. The females of T. atlantiope sp. nov. resemble females of T. xantho . Additionally, both species occur in sympatry, which may hinder their correct identification. However, the size of the apical spots (larger in T. xantho ), the presence of a dark brown discal spot in CuA 2 –2A and the absence of submarginal spots between R 5 –2A of VFW are external characters that distinguish T. atlantiope sp. nov. from T. xantho .
