Type locality. South America .

Comments. Clark (1864) reported H. verecundus ( Say, 1823) for South America but did not provide exact country data. Sharp (1882) mentioned that the type specimen was provided with a label referring to South East Asia: “+ Java”. Furthermore, H. verecundus was not mentioned by Trémouilles (1996) in his revision of the genus Hydaticus in South America. Despite intensive investigations in the museums in Paris and London, we were unable to locate any specimen related to this species.
