Dasymutilla bellatrix Manley & Pitts , new species

Holotype female, Ecuador, 1935, R. Wright Barker [ DGMC].

Diagnosis of Female ( Plate C2A View PLATE 2 ). This species is notable in having the mesosoma slightly broader than long, by having a distinct scutellar scale, and having a bilobed area of black setae anteriorly on tergum II, while the apical fringe is black and the remainder of the tergum has orange setae. The integument of this species is entirely black. The setae on the dorsum of the mesosoma are primarily orange, surrounded by white, those of tergum III are black, and those of the remainder of the body are white. Also, the head is narrower than the mesosoma, the antennal scrobe is very weakly carinate dorsally, a genal carina is lacking, and the pygidium is longitudinally rugose.

Description. Female: Length, 10 mm. Head. Black, clothed with appressed white setae; mandible acute at apex, and lacking inner tooth; clypeus transversely concave, anterior margin nearly straight; scape carinate, clothed with white setae; flagellomere I slightly longer than remaining segments; antennal scrobe very weakly carinate; front and vertex with coarse contiguous punctures, sculpture concealed by setae; gena shining, but with contiguous punctures, genal carina absent; head 2.1 mm wide, narrower than mesosoma, relative width 0.75.

Mesosoma. Black, broader than long (2.7 mm wide X 2.5 mm long); mesosoma with conspicuous scutellar scale and sinuate transverse carina anterior to scale; dorsum and sides of propodeum with coarse, contiguous punctures, sculpture concealed by setae; anterior margin slightly convex, not emarginate medially; dorsum primarily with orange setae, bordered by white on all sides; pleura smooth, with white setae.

Legs black, with dense white setae.

Metasoma. Black, with shallow contiguous punctures, sculpture concealed by dense setae; tergum I impunctate; pygidium longitudinally rugose; sternum I with sharp median carina, produced into tooth posteriorly; tergum I with white setae; tergum II with bilobed area of dense black setae anteriorly, and apical fringe of black, remainder of tergum with dense orange setae; tergum III with black setae; remainder of metasoma with white setae.

Male. Unknown.

Distribution. Ecuador.

Etymology. From the Latin, meaning “female warrior.”

Remarks. This species is known only from the female holotype. It looks very similar to D. blattoserica except for the pattern of black setae on tergum II.
