• Small to medium-sized mammals with large head, elongated snout ending in a mobile, disk-like nose, short neck, prominent ears, small eyes, robust jaws with long canines, strong legs, small tail, and bristly coat.

• From near-desert conditions to closed forest in tropical, subtropical, and boreal regions.

• 6 genera, 17 species,at least 45 extant taxa.

• 2 species Critically Endangered, 3 species Endangered, 5 species Vulnerable; 2 subspecies Extinct since 1600.
